Write-up · DTC skincare

Day 1: no SMS channel. Day 18: first revenue campaign.

By Grant Osei, Messaging Operations & Compliance Lead · Published July 26, 2026 · Figures illustrative and anonymized

A DTC skincare brand wanted SMS live before a fall product drop. The catch: no number, no registration, no consent language, no list. Eighteen days later the first campaign went out; by day 90 SMS was producing 11% of store revenue from 4,100 subscribers. The timeline below is the part most brands underestimate.

Where the 18 days actually went

Days 1 to 3: platform selection and A2P 10DLC brand registration, about $44 to $48 one-time, plus the $15 campaign vetting fee. Days 4 to 9: carrier vetting ran in parallel with consent-language drafting for the checkout and popup, and the welcome flow got built against Postscript's $0.58 to $3.05 earnings-per-message band. Days 10 to 14: list collection opened, quiet-hours rules went into the send tooling, and the 240-character copy templates were tested. Days 15 to 18: seed sends, deliverability checks, then the first campaign. Grant's operating rule after seven years of registrations: start carrier vetting the same week you sign the platform contract, because it is the one step you cannot compress.

What made it safe, not just fast

Every opt-in stored a timestamp, the consent text shown, and the collection surface, which is the record you produce if a TCPA demand letter arrives; statutory damages run $500 to $1,500 per text. Quiet-hours enforcement followed the stricter state rules from day one. The welcome flow's $2.60 per message lands mid-band, and the 11% revenue share is deliberately below the 21 to 30% cohort that 31% of marketers report, because month three is too early to push cadence. The full registration mechanics live on the compliance & deliverability service page, and the week-by-week method is on Process. Sources: Twilio's verification docs and Postscript's 2026 benchmarks.
